How to Get Your Wyoming Learner's Permit (WYDOT Guide)

To get a Instruction Permit (learner permit) in Wyoming, you must be at least 15 and apply in person at the Wyoming Department of Transportation, Driver Services (WYDOT). Applicants under 18 generally need a parent or guardian to sign, and many states also require enrollment in or completion of a driver-education course.

Wyoming's WYDOT knowledge test covers traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving — including high-wind and mountain-pass driving — from the Wyoming Rules of the Road. Teens complete supervised practice under graduated licensing.

Bring original or certified documents (not photocopies) that establish:

• Proof of legal presence (must present one): state-certified birth certificate, valid unexpired U.S. passport or passport card, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Certificate of Citizenship, or Certificate of Naturalization. Documents must be certified originals or true copies; photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted.
• Proof of identity (must present one): a U.S. state or territory driver license or ID card, state-certified birth certificate, valid unexpired U.S. passport or passport card, or other government-issued ID.
• Two proofs of Wyoming residency showing your name and current physical residential address (no PO boxes), dated within the last 45 days and from two different sources, such as a utility bill, lease or rental agreement, mortgage document, bank statement, or vehicle/voter registration. For a minor, a parent or guardian may provide the residency proof.
• Social Security number for the application (proof such as a Social Security card, W-2, or other official document showing your full number is recommended but not required).
• Applicants under 18 must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian granting consent.

In Wyoming, the knowledge test is taken in person. A vision screening plus a written multiple-choice knowledge exam on Wyoming traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving, taken on an automated testing system in person at a WYDOT Driver Services exam station.

The WYDOT charges $45 for a Class C license or permit issuance for the permit. Amounts can change and sometimes include separate knowledge-test or service fees, so verify the current cost with the WYDOT before you visit.

Wyoming uses a graduated licensing system: an instruction permit may be issued at age 15 and must be held at least 10 days while the driver completes 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night).
